On the last ChaosCast, I issued a challenge to anyone foolhardy enough to try it: to level a character from rank 1 to 40 doing nothing but RvR/PvP.  It looks like one person already took the bait, and I'd love to see more people try this.

So here are the rules I thought up, just to outline this experiment:
  1. You are to create a new character and level from 1 to 40 without any help from PvE.
  2. Acceptable leveling includes scenarios, RvR lakes, keep sieges and the like.
  3. All gear you wear must be attained via PvP drops, renown gear or oRvR influence gear.  You may buy gear from the AH to fill in gaps if need be.
  4. Since you can't help it when the game awards you XP via Tome Unlocks, you aren't penalized for this, but you shouldn't actively try to do a lot of PvE unlocks either, other than running from place to place.
  5. The only quests you may do are ones that are directly tied into PvP, scenarios and RvR (such as quests to run a particular scenario, scout out an RvR location or whatnot).
  6. Crafting is acceptable, but only within the bounds of PvP (you can scavenge players' corpses, but no killing PvE animals for butchering).
I know this is doable, but I'm curious how difficult it might be, especially after the increased XP rates in oRvR and oRvR influence gear.  Any takers?

I almost did this in T1 so far with my BW on Badlands, Cagel. I did some quests in the starting area until like level 4 but moved on to oRvR + Scenarios for 5-11.

It seems like for T1 it would be really easy as long as there is action going on. Add in the Kill 10 and Scenario Quests and you can level really quickly.

When I played through The end of T2 through to the beginning of T4 on my WP there was no action in the RvR Lakes and Scenarios popped very slowly, so leveling in RvR was just about the slowest thing in the world. I'd like to see if it is still doable in T3 with the changes in EXP and nightly action.

Hrrm, my Knight is level 9 or I would. Might if I get an itch to start another alt.

Based on 20 hours per week and pure RvR with the current numbers:

Very doable in T1 (You'll get to T2 within 1-2 weeks).
Somewhat doable in T2 (You'll get to T3 within 3-4 weeks).
Getting harder in T3 (You'll get to T4 within 2-3 months).
Harsh in T4 (You won't reach 40 for at least 3-4 months).

I do hope he picked something extremely powerful in RvR like a tank or stealther or it's going to be even worse. Also, I recommend picking up scavenging so he can make potions.

I'd love to be proven wrong with the above numbers, but frankly, that's been my experience when focusing purely on RvR in WAR.

I've been doing on and off since launch with a wee Squig Hunter. It's an interesting challenge -- I just wanted to see what things were available/denied to a completely pure RvR character.

One thing that's a little unavoidable is the XP you get from discovering a new zone (which I had to do to trainers at various times... and to get the Heavy Metal cloak reward at the capitol city).

I have two caveats that I am giving myself:
  - I try to avoid killing non-guard mobs that are encountered in the RvR lakes
  - I will allow myself to go into the PvE areas to kill the heroes that are needed to gain the Kill-X-Players gear rewards
  - I'm keeping away from guildy gifted gear, or auction house gear, as I don't see that that fits in the OnlyRvR scope of things.

I'll join you on this, i've been meaning to start a Destruction alt but just haven't gotten around to it.  Have been thinking about a Squid Herder or Shaman, but i'll definitely give this challenge a go.

I'm a past Lineage 2 player and have taken part in the many Korean grindfest games. The only thing I am worried about his my needy GF. That and the time I have to devote to this project will be limited to start, but I plan to be roaring along in a couple of weeks.

I will more then likely be on the destro side since I have characters there already. Though, I am thinking about deleteing those and maybe starting an Order char to be outnumbered and have plenty of people to kill. I'm taking suggestions, and I have been researching the route I want to take all day today. I will get kicked off tonight, and I will be updating as much as possible.

Thanks for the love Syp!

I've done this to T3 a few times, and T2 a handful of times. I can't agree with Snafzg's time estimates though, it doesn't take me nearly that long to level via RVR. I took a Sorcerer and Squig Herder, and Marauder to R11 each in a single evening Friday, Saturday and Sunday easily just doing Nordland RVR and SCs. The only quests I did were the warcamp ones and they all require doing something in an RVR area or killing players, and I do them mainly to get gear. One upside is my RR easily stays capped, but one downside is that I max out RVR influence long before my RR can reach the level required to use the best rewards.

T2 does go more slowly, of course. But 1 week to R21 is entirely reasonable if your server isn't a ghost town. Grinding SCs alone would certainly do it, especially Mourkain if your side is winning. But since the RVR influence was added I haven't been grinding the SCs, the ORVR action has really increased and I've advanced multiple ranks per evening when the action is nonstop for a few hours straight.

T3 goes more slowly, but still way too quickly for my taste. I have trouble staying in T3 for a month and could never do it without playing multiple characters. When my characters hit R31 I tend to shelve them and only bring out when something spectacular is happening, since I get wistful knowing I'll end up deleting to free up a character slot. I'm on my 4th Squig Herder now, 2nd Shaman and Witch Elf in T3. I wish they gave us more than 10 character slots, or at least enough to have one of each career at the same time, but that's another topic. :)

In the couple days after RVR influence was added the T3 population exploded from barely 1 roving warband to 3 or more, and lately has settled down to around 2 warbands on each side on my server. My Squig Herder went from R29 to R31 in about 3 hours that first night, and I switched to my Shaman and went from 22 to 24 in the next few hours of RVR. I'd love it if it took 2 or 3 months to get to T4! I rarely get to spend more than a couple weeks with a T3 char before I am forced out of T3 and end up rerolling.

I never thought of levelling via RVR as a challenge or limiting my gameplay, that concept is a bit flipped backwards to me. In my view, having done the PVE quests back when the game was released and having seen that content I feel no need to repeat it, and all it does is shorten the fun playtime of my characters by pushing them toward retirement. It's as if the XP bar is a doomsday clock for my characters, and every bit of fun causes the clock to tick forward, inching it's way to the frustrating (and now even unwanted, due to population caps) pre-40 T4 ranks. Since RVR is much more fun to me that the static PVE content I've already experienced, I don't do the PVE anymore.

I did this in T1/T2 with several of my alts (Swordmaster, White Lion, and even on my main to a certain extent) until capping out both tiers, but once you hit 22 and you're a lowbie in T3, it becomes really sluggish. Also, since the quest rewards for the scenario quests don't scale very well, your XP gain from those really drops off in T3/T4, too.

Either way... I'll pass on this one. Good luck, suckers. :p

Who enjoys pve quests really? After 10 years of daoc and several other mmorpg, rvr/pvp is the only sh.t I enjoy.

All my toons in Warhammer are fed and raised up by the blood of other players. :)
