Holy debate, Batman! You never know what might set off a flashfire of frenzied discussion, but I guess wards were one of those hot-button topics that needed to be pushed now and then to relieve pressure. Anyway, far more wizened minds than mine over at RP That Way and Reroller have picked up the angry fumble of my ward rant and run with it. Great articles, both of them, and I encourage you to check them out.
A couple qualifying statements to my first article that I feel I have to mention:
- Apparently there *are* ways to earn warded gear through RvR, so I was talking out of my tuckus there. See? Like my wife always reminds me, I do not yet know it all.
- The initial point of the post, and what I think might've gotten lost in all the ward talk, is that even though I might praise, discuss and rag on various features, bugs and systems in WAR, very little of it actually touches my emotional sphere, and I'm never over here spewing invective at Mythic. Wards really are one of the few things that make me emotionally upset, possibly more in theory than I've experienced in practice, because I've always hated the height requirement on rollercoasters and gear requirement in MMOs.

I like the enchant idea, it would be easy enough for them to add influence vendors or something I suppose. The ward thing really bugs me as well, it dosent seem designed to add any challenge to the end game, just to prevent you from really getting into it without going through hurdles.

I think that the fact that you can earn the warded gear through different avenues (RvR, including a few pieces straight merchant bought) and PvE, mix and match those pieces as you wish is flexable enough. As a DPS you're only usually going to be required to have 2-3. For lesser ward that's the two pieces from vendor and either one Bloodlord drop or one gold bag from a keep in t4.
The idea of it might strike terror in you/others, but the practice of it is much less trying. Tanks are the only ones who really need to have a full set. Â If you can't manage to either kill a handful of easily accessed bosses twice a week, or focus on taking some keeps for the loot then I'm going to be elitist enough to say "If you can't put in the minimum of effort it takes to be warded, you deserve to suck at fighting Fortress Lord's over they guy who did take the time." You're not locked out of the Fortress, you can still be there killing people and be part of the effort. You just don't get to be in the main warband or two that focus on the Lord. We're not talking WoW raiding here, we're talking a few hours a week doing what you're likely doing in the game regardless for a single battle that the whole sever doesn't need to do anyway. What happened to being proud of things you put effort into? Everything doens't have to handed to you on a platter, including some of the most difficult PvE fights in the game (Lords and Kings). Earn it, you'll feel a heck of a lot prouder about it when you get it.Â

Actually, I think wards are a pretty good in some respects that you missed. They allow Mythic to create a progressive series of content without the ridiculous amount of power creep present in many other games. I.E. It allows mythic to make the higher end gear 'unlock' more content, but not have the people with that level of gear just destroy everyone who doesn't have it in RvR.
Obviously, there are problems with the system, as most of the later gear is nigh on impossible to get (I can't imagine how hard gearing up your guild in city capture PQ's must be), and the whole system isn't progressive, like most of the rest of WAR, but the base idea is sound. Without wards, the 'hardcore' (or lucky), would destroy all of the newly minted 40's the moment they stepped into RvR.

Thought provoking post as always, this post & Reroller's post on the subject got me motivated to write up some thought i've had on the subject for a while.
@ Dahrad
I 100%agree
To use a WoW analogy Wards are basically a inverse resilience, they are a stat designed to only affect PvE.
In terms of dungeon progression i think they work ok, not perfect by any means but ok.
But the problem is when it comes to RvR.
To me it all comes down to 1 thing
People don't want to have to PvE to RvR
Currently getting a full set of one of the PvE wards is alot more reliable than getting one of the RvR ones. Its not that there is no RvR way to get them, but because the PVE items have No RR requirement they can be obtained allot faster.
@Ainilome
Tanks classes currently make up 1/4 of those available to people for them as you say those 5 peices are very important.
Just to use a well know example look at Thulf of Stunty Stompa fame, hes wearing full sentinel gear but is only RR 31, to have the equivalent full RvR set he would have to be 15 RR's higher, and have won the roll in 5 successful fortress sieges.
Which brings up another problem, PvE is easier than RvR. Im not saying PvE gear is handed to you on a plate because it blatantly isn't ,but for example if every mob and boss in Bastion Stair learned and adapted to the tactics you used it would be alot harder than it is.
I have always and will always hate gear checks fights, they required the least skill and are the least fun. Its fine to put some sorts of checks and balances in place to make sure that people don't go straight from dinging 40 to killing karl franz but i don't think the current system works.
The way the current RvR gear is given out makes it worse too, people know that contribution is broken so they feel helpless.
The problem is if they fix it the problem will actually get worse. Because of the nature of campaign progress, even people in full greater ward gear need to help out in normal keep fights. Now who do you think would have the best chance of getting max contribution? Yep that's right the guy who already geared up. Currently there is no way of passing on a Loot bag even if someone chooses to. So all a fixed contribution system would do in RvR if introduced now would be make it harder to gear up.
To me content should be accessible to everyone, but those who put the effort in should still be rewarded.
anyways i made a little post on the way id handle it
