Story of the Week: Population Imbalance Apocalypse!

  • So this all started with a poll over at WHA - "Which class will you play on release?" Many people answered. Snafzg of The Greenskin poured the results into a headache-inducing spreadsheet, and came up with the conclusion that, as it stands now, more players are looking to play the Destruction side than Order, causing an unsettling imbalance in a PvP-centric game. Site upon site, blog upon blog took this news, ripped their shirts in twain, poured ashes on their heads, and declared a population imbalance apocalypse on WAR. I like it when people get up in a tizzy over something that hasn't actually happened yet. It amuses the Syp.

It is pretty impressive :)

I still have some concerns over population balance, not based on any data though just in the mechanics. Have they said how they plan on 'coaxing' folks to an underpopulated side? Will they shut new characters on the over-populated side? Bonus's to the under? How did they deal with it in DAoC?

"Michael Zenke, author of the “Massively Goes to WAR” articles, has left Massively"

The comment you link to indicates that Zenke is no longer at Slashdot not Massively.

P.S. Thats a lotta news to catch up on, cheers for organising it :)

@ poe - It does seem a little unclear if Zenke is at slashdot or not. But he makes it clear he is no longer at Massively. He says "My primary gig is over at Massively, but I'm also writing at places like Wired, Gamasutra, and 1up."

Nice work, Syp. And yeah, don't get me started!:D

@Werit, back in the old days of DAoC, we dealt with imbalances by kicking the crap out of our foes! That's how we rolled on Palomides anyway.

But in all seriousness, imbalances usually worked themselves out naturally in-game overtime, and if I remember correctly...I believe there were levelling bonuses for the underdogs, this helped get realm mates up to speed, and encouraged folks from other servers to join the fray for a different cause.

Remember that you can only play one faction per server in Warhammer, this was true with DAoC's three factions as well. It wasn't uncommon for folks to have toons on different servers...which can have benefits for the community at large as well.
