(bonus article before I leave! enter the contest already!)Although a lot of people refuse to see it or write it off as a conspiratoid mindset, every bit of released news and my entire gut is telling me that Blizzard is not writing off Warhammer Online as a minor threat -- a la Age of Conan. It's not just the eerily similar features that Blizz is just now announcing, but the pacing of the hype. Right now, there are just two games in the forefront of the MMOscape: WoW and WAR. Everything else, in terms of hype and news, is third and falling behind. And the conflict between these two titles is which can achieve the upperhand... that day. Which title has just released the latest bit of attention-grabbing headlines.
The conflict is real, because there's a concrete struggle for subscriber dollars: WoW wants to retain all of theirs (and get even more), and WAR wants to get a huge head start and launch into the million-plus subscriber club. This not being a perfect world, that means both companies see players as having to choose between one or the other -- WoW stands to lose some of theirs, and WAR stands to not gain as many as they ideally could.
In a perfect world, your average dedicated, hardcore MMO player would be able to play all the titles they desired for as many hours a week as they'd like. But that's not how MMOs go -- they reward monogamous relationships, and the more you play one title, the more you're rewarded for it and have invested in it.
WoW's latest "lookit me!" headline is their Lich King beta start and NDA drop. We can muse over whether or not this was done to preempt WAR's closely upcoming NDA drop (safe money says "yes"), but the fact is that right now, today, the hype-o-meter has swung in WoW's direction. And for many previous Warcraft players who are looking to play WAR (such as myself), this is a critical moment of hesitation.
The question pops up in my mind: "Will I regret switching to Warhammer and, for once, not playing the new Warcraft content when it comes out?" Maybe it's arisen in yours.
After all, from the player's point of view, MMOs are a serious investment. We invest part of our social lives in making friends and joining guilds, we invest effort and research to learn the game world and how to play it well, and, oh yeah, we invest time. Gobs and gobs of time. I myself -- and this is not to brag, at all -- have three 70's in WoW with pretty decent gear, with a couple more close to the current max level. That's nothing to sneeze at; it represents a few years' worth of my gaming life, all done with the mindset that I was building up my characters to face ever-greater challenges. You do the grind now to invest in a better character for the future, when you'll need it. And now that the future is almost here, it feels like I'm abandoning my battle-ready toons to oblivion, just because I want to start fresh in a world that looks more promising.
Don't get me wrong, no matter what new coats of paint WoW slaps on with expansions, the core gameplay is the same, and I've had my fill of that. I know, in my heart, that if for some reason I switched back to WoW this fall, I would engorge myself on the surface layers of a couple month's worth of polished content before hitting the same layer of gameplay duldrum that ran me out of the game in the first place. It doesn't mean it stops feeling like I'm abandoning Syp, Ghostfire, Snappi and my other cadre.
Blizzard is banking on this moment of hesitation to get their hook back in your mouth and reel you in for a promised good time. Some will bite, yes sir. Some will have the time and luxury to play both titles. And some will feel pangs of regret, but move on, knowing that it's for the best.
I don't know if I'll ever set foot in Azeroth again, but I don't see my investment as lost -- hours of great gameplay fun, stress relieving evenings, the making and growth of several awesome friendships, the saving of countless dollars I'd be spending on other games, and the stirring of my MMO passion pot.
I have a passion pot?
Um, I'm out of here. See you guys in a week!

I understand that feeling. I myself have zero regret. One 60 Druid, and then 2 new 70's in TBC were some of the best gaming investments I've ever made, but no matter how cool the new expansion is or what they add, Blizzard has made WoW into something I will never go back to or regret leaving.

I put all my eggs in a basket with WAR. If it sucks I am done playing all MMO's. It better be good Mythic. Yeah you Mythic I am pointing my finger at you!

I think those ex-WoW players that get into beta may have second thoughts. For the rest of us "out of site out of mind" will make it easier to stay away from WoW with out any regrets.

It's this rush to be FIRST that causes all this stress in you young'uns. You've got your level 70 characters waiting in WOW. It isn't like they're going to vanish. Play Warhammer when it launches, then when you hit cap and it starts to feel a bit too-familiar (hopefully it'll keep you interested into 2009), cancel it and switch over to check out Wrath of the Lich King. When that gets dull, switch back. You needn't be in on Lich King at launch. It's just an expansion.
You're young, you *can* play them both. Maybe just not at the same time. I mean, what's the next big MMO coming after these two launch? I'm seeing pretty much nothing any time soon. KOTORO maybe, but that's going to be late next year at the very earliest, and probably some time in 2010. Let's hope its 2010 at least. Earlier than that and it'll probably launch broken.

Not much fanfare yet. Did a google search on "Lich King NDA" vs "Warhammer NDA" and there's 10X more for Warhammer. Looks like WOW is is getting a little "long in the tooth" for some (http://www.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=14236) and they want to at least take a peak at somethng fresh. If WAR gets out a few months ahead of WoLK there will be a signifigant hit to Blizzard's market share (as well as as explains the WAR content cuts for Fall release). Though not in their nature, it will be interesting to see if Blizzard will risk releasing WoLK a little early as well?

I have no regrets of leaving WoW. Really I only regret not having left sooner, back when the good part was just starting to run dry. I beat it way beyond dead.
WAR will be a different game. No more instance farming, or fighting to organize highly specified teams for highly specified and choreographed dances that amount to "boss fights".
It had its charm, but it's day is done. There's a new game in town.

What killed me about the max level thing in WoW is yes, you invest a lot of time to get the best stuff so you have it when you needed it, like you said. But the only thing I truly enjoyed was PVP in the game - so the only time I needed the best gear was for PVP to beat the other guy with leet gear.
That always led to disappointment because there was always another tier this or whatever gear coming out. That's what led me to twinking - once I had the best stuff for my twink I didn't have to worry about new stuff coming out anytime soon and I could focus on the part of the game I enjoyed.

It's funny for me when the NDA on the Wrath beta came down, I was less interested.
Maybe I have played WoW way too long, or maybe I am just no longer there target player. But the things they are announcing now carry no interest for me. It's too little too late, and the core of the game is still the same. And frankly it's the core game in WoW that has burnt me out. I am still madly chomping at the bit to get into the War beta, for many reasons but the biggest one is just getting a nice core change from WoW.
Enjoy your time away.

ummh, no matter how many new things Blizzard puts in the expansion and how many layers of paint they dump on it, it doesnt take from the fact that WoW is a hamster wheel... it was fun the first 3 years, now its just not. I cant stomach another hour in azeroth, and I have been offline 3 months now, thats imho.
have fun in that mission!

I don't consider it as time lost either. When I started in WoW, it was fun and exciting and I had a blast. Now, I see that Blizzard is sort of failing to see their mistakes and just paint a pretty picture over them and sprinkle some fancy other things, but still ignore the original problems.
I'll never step foot into Azeroth again. I hope to be duking it out in RvR until the plugs are pulled. Azeroth had it's time but Mythic has more that caters to me casual play style, Blizzard doesn't.
I see a lot of their player base going back to check out the new content. If it is anything like Burning Crusade, it will be a month and they will jump over to WAR.
