Subscriber numbers are funny things in MMO circles. Players live and die by what little is freely given by companies -- who more often than not hide these numbers for various reasons -- and entire verdicts of a game's future can be foretold in one day. People analyze, quote and overanalyze based on these pieces of information while fully acknowledging that they aren't in full possession of all the statistics involved. It's kind of entertaining, in a scary way.So let's get it out of the way: Warhammer Online has 300K subs. Your reaction may vary:
- "300,000? That's IT? This game is dying!"
- "Still doing better than many other MMOs..."
- "Guess it's truly a niche title."
- "300K isn't bad, especially since the game is improving and we know that the numbers will increase -- as most all MMOs do in their first year."
- "That's 300,000 smart, sexy and slightly insane people."
I'm not here to be a blind apologist nor a kneejerk hater -- just a player who's given a chunk of info and not really told what to do with it. I think it was a very calculated move for Mythic to release their huge announcement last week, because they had to know that anything less than 750,000 current subs (the last solid number we got, which were registered players about a month in -- but not necessarily paying subscribers who had gone beyond the "free" month) was going to be taken badly.
I'll be honest -- I kind of assumed we were at the half-mil mark, and 300,000 does seem low for the game post-holiday and whatnot. I know Paul Barnett said something along the lines of hoping for one million subs by Christmas 2008, and I'd expected one million by the new year (starry-eyed dreamer, I am).Â
If we were to remain at 300,000, I'd definitely concede that WAR had found its niche and was going to settle in for that. Yet, there is a lot to consider:
- This is 300K current paying subscribers, versus 750K registered players who had yet to pay a monthly subscription. Comparing those two numbers is a bit misleading because those are two different categories of players.
- Is the game currently increasing or decreasing in subscribers? Other than the 750K number, we have no concrete subscriber numbers from October through December -- knowing what the initial month dropoff was would be helpful, as would trends (peaks, valleys, climbs and falls).
- According to MMOGCHART, World of Warcraft crossed into the one million mark by this time frame (Oct - Jan). Other than WoW, MMOGCHART shows only a handful of games that crossed 300,000 in subscribers: Lineage (which took about a year to cross that mark), Lineage 2 (a couple months), Final Fantasy XI (about a year-plus), Runescape (3 years), EverQuest (1 1/2 years), Star Wars Galaxies (one month, but it peaked there), EverQuest 2 (a month, peaked shortly thereafter), Dofus (2 years). Now, you have to take MMOGCHART with a *huge* grain of salt, but the number of MMOs who never crossed 300,000 on their list -- including DDO, DAoC, LOTRO and whatnot -- are the majority, not minority.
- Assuming that WAR isn't in subscriber freefall, 300K more than enough to ensure continued operation and development of this title. Once development costs are paid off, it will be generating a healthy little packet of revenue for EA.
- WAR's Russian release, and the impact on sub numbers from that.

Something else to consider is that December 31, 2008 is taking into account all the 3- and 6-month subscriptions that people may not be playing anymore. Another is that Mythic themselves have stated that WAR would probably be even more popular in Europe than it would be in NA, meaning the split could be close to 50/50 (then again, GOA completely botched the first month of WAR in Europe so maybe not).
There's definitely a lot to talk about now. I am anxiously awaiting Mark's response to all this.

i did some calculations from xfire and was not far off from this. we know there are over 11-million WOW users. there are around 100,000 xfire users playing wow per day for a ratio of .9%. If there is a similar ratio for warhammer which has 3500 xfire users playing per day then the number would be around 380,000. i figured this was artificially high since so many wow players are in asia and not likely to be on xfire. so i would estimate around 250,000 active players. i personally let my subscription run out in early jan after the 3 months were up. what's interesting about this estimate is that LOTRO may have comparable numbers to WAR or even surpassed it recently, though turbine has always been hush, hush about subscriber numbers.Â

300,000.. X15.00 USD X12 = 54 million dollars a year.. I guess WAR might just.. scrape by.
If they don't turn it into WoW lite that is, that is why most of us are here, to escape the squeaky clean Disney World simulator that has sucked in so many lives.

Honestly, I find 300K subs to be a decent showing. I'm sure we all knew that after the MMO tourists left after the free month was up we would see a decline in sub numbers. However, if we ignore WoW, because WoW's success is hardly what any other MMO is shooting for, we will see that many long-term and arguably successful MMOs never even got past 300K.
MMO's like lotro and possibly COH/V, the korean titles of course, and still many of these games are still going. Aren't there even Daoc servers still online? I think that WAR is doing very well at this juncture, and barring any major mishaps, it will be on its way to the #2 subscriber spot.Â
Don't forget, as Grumlug pointed out, 300K at 15 bucks a sub is still a heck of a lot of money every month. Almost 4.5 million. That's if they never get any new subs, and I personally know of many players coming back once the Choppa/Slayer are added in.
Just because a game isn't pulling WoW numbers does NOT mean it is not a success. WAR is clearly a successful game with a devoted playerbase, despite the naysayers. And I'm confident that we haven't seen the last improvements to the game by a long shot.

Also, I wanted to add that if Mythic wants to inject some subs into the game, they need to open up an Asian client. Between the Koreans and the Chinese you would likely see close to half a million players added on easy.
BTW, Syp. Your blog crashes my browser (Safari) every time the "5 gum" ad comes up when I load the page.

I know they were just in Korea talking about the game, so hopefully they're making inroads there.

300k subs is in my opinion an excellent stand point where the game should be. Sadly many people have not bothered to factor in all the issues that do attribute to flucations in both playerbase and industry stability.
- You have the NA recession (if you cant buy a PC to run WAR you cant play it now can you)
- AÂ slew of disapointed fans who refused to even play war without their classes or cities at launch.
- Rocky start in EU
- Hate to admit it but lack luster foresight into ORvR problems and stability.
- A stiff launch competitor only weeks off from WAR's launch date.
- Multiple rough hits to both AoC and TR to give weight to the many sky is falling chatter going around.
Some things people are not factoring in right now however, which are on the direct upswing and positive.
- 2 new classes returning WAR to its original 24
- DF 2.0 which I know will seriously boost interest in WAR as this is most often considered a pinnacle of game design by Mythic
- WoTLK burn out and boredom
- Still no Asia release which is apparently in the works
- WAR's Russian release
- An incredible effort by Mythic to layout its game plan for the next 6 months (increasing visibility is a + in my opinion)

I have been doing a lot of research on WAR(ok so youtube videos and the ocasional Massively post) Trying to determine if thats going to be my new home. I have heard a lot of "no man it sucks" kind of talk but have not heard any actual facts and critisizm on the game itself other than what some biast sites have posted. Obviously you fine folks play the game and dont get paid for positive reviews(ama right?). I however would like to give this game a chance and gain an opinion of my own. So if anyone would like to give me a chance to play and possibly get a month free service pending my opinion of the game please someone send me a friend trial code. include your realm and toon name and I will cruise with you during my evaluation.Â
I admit I previously played Wow, but that has really lost its luster, no one wants to do the fun stuff they only want to RAID and focus on gear and specs. I just want to have fun and meat fun people. so maybe one of you great people can help give them a sub base of 300,001 .
