I have to face the facts: based on my slow-as-snails leveling and my general casual playtime, there's not a great chance I'm going to get to participate in a city siege this year. Not to mention how fortress sieges now bring my computer down to its knees -- it's gotten WORSE over the last couple patches, if you can believe it -- so I have an inkling of how bad my computer would react to such an event.

By a few current reports -- via Reroller and Werit (part one and part two) -- I might not be missing much. Some of it seems to be working fine, but most of the current state of city sieges is lackluster or disappointing, particularly for those who might rush into a capital city expecting epic battles and desperate fights in back alleys.

Mythic didn't put all its eggs into one basket, but city sieges might be considered the biggest egg -- and a slightly cracked one, to continue the metaphor. This is something they absolutely have to get right. They have to. If players ultimately cannot topple an enemy's city and do something to change the game on a bigger scale -- and have fun doing so -- then that's it. Might as well pack our bags and head on out, because at that point WAR becomes a slightly more PvP-oriented version of WoW with nothing huge to distinguish itself. Maybe you disagree with that statement, but the sheer amount of PR that Mythic did concerning city sieges prior to launch put themselves in that position.

We're almost five months post-launch, and most likely every server's capital cities are sitting at five stars because not one of them's been toppled (at least, not without exploits). Servers and factions have their RvR experience stalled somewhere between fortress capture and functional city sieging. Again, I have no first-hand experience with any of this, other than dithering around in T4 RvR lakes and watching the abacus of zone flipping slowly change hands.

It's here where I start to wonder about what most people assume capital city sieges might be like when they first start WAR and before they do any serious research on the fact.  A lot of criticism has been levied at the overuse of PQs and the lack of solid RvR once an opposing force is inside the city.  Would first time players assume they could run through the streets, lighting houses ablaze?  Perhaps looting indescriminantly?  What would make their eyes light up with delight upon witnessing?

Capital City sieges are, obviously, a nightmare to design and implement, and I do not envy or belittle the effort on the development team's behalf in working on this.  I do sincerely hope we get word of a capital city falling for the right reasons soon -- I maintain that will be a one-time-only PR coup that might be worth all this fuss.

It is definitely flawed to say the least.  Aspects of it were fun, but by and large it seemed far to PvE than it should have been.
I have my own take on the city siege as well when my server sieged Inevitable City here
and I have posted some thoughts on how some of the major problems can be fixed here

Sorry to hear that Scheming house is still being a pain Syp.  If it wasn't so expensive I'd say sue the crap out of them for stealing your intellectual property

It seems like alot of us have hit the same issue quite close together. I know my experiences at the weekend annoyed the crap out of me. I was barely capable of coherent thought when I logged after a short period, there was some paint drying in the hall I wanted to watch. I could just about manage a rant yesterday, I was that underwhelmed.

Pretty much agree with what's already been said, but there is a shedload of work to be done in a very short period of time, to bring things upto a reasonable standard of "Fun". All I can say, is stay trading forts & keeps, it's significantly more fulfilling. Let Mythic do some more work on it, before you have your 1st go, otherwise you may not want to go back.

I have been trying to think about solutions to the problems I met last weekend, but I am still pondering them.

Oh if get chance, go look at http://syncaine.wordpress.com who had different view of the same things over the weekend. It just shows how hit and miss the city capture experience is. This divergence of experience needs to be reduced, otherwise its going to be PVEhammer for me.  Small note, we aren't on the same server, but his/her fun was at the other end of the scale to mine, from the sounds of it.

I agree that these events need work. I made some suggestions on my blog on how to fix them:

LOL, I keep getting spam trackbacks from Scheming House, from your posts. Is there no way you can have Chaos Moon block their "grabber"? You must have their IP in your logs somewhere. :)

We sieged IC back in January for the first time, and sieged it almost twice a week since then on Azazel.  Destro puts up no fight basically.

Only problem is the Second stage of the city siege after the initial 5 hour PQ farming.  The lord at the end still 2 shots the main tank in full Superior Wards(darkpromise/invader) gear.  So we're basically blocked from fully capturing the city until then.

I'm really looking forward to city-sieging in the future, but at the moment neither side on my server has been able to get past the fortress. The only time that we even got close to IC, the server crashed and thwarted our attack.

You should push elf/dwarf pairing.  The fort pushes there won't crash the server as its not connected to altdorf/inevitable city/lost vale instances so chances of it crashing during fort pushes are minimal.
