Rog over at NecroRogIcon finds Mythic's latest push for the Recruit-a-Friend program upsetting, going so far as to link it to RMT -- spending money to get bonuses in the game. His quick post makes a second point, that these are features that Mythic should've included in WAR in the first place, but now we're being made to work for them (and have friends pay).On one hand, it's kind of puzzling why this would set him off (pushing aside the "he doesn't play WAR right now anyway" issue) -- why shouldn't Mythic, or any other MMO companies, try to incentivize their playerbase into helping them recruit more subscriptions? Yeah, in an ideal world, we would all be telling our friends anyway, out of the goodness of our heart and a desire to share our passion, but we're also pretty lazy as well. I like WAR, but I don't actively pursue my friends and family to get them to try it. Now, I have a reason -- it's selfish, to be sure, but it's the same sort of motivating factor that used to get me to sell those crappy magazines or candy bars when I was a kid for school, because they'd dangle shiny toys in front of our face for the best sellers. We're doing a bit of extra work on Mythic's behalf, so I'm okay with getting rewarded for it.
Besides, the incentives are pretty tempting across the board, you have to admit. 30 days free game time? That's $15 in my pocket for just handing out a free trial and hoping they'll sign up. In game pets? Something we've been clamoring for, and now there's a way to get them. Perhaps the last item -- the "get 4 subs and we give you this" item -- is the most controversial in terms of what it gives you: XP and renown bumps, plus the ability to jack a friend up near to your level so you can play together.
I don't think this qualifies as RMT, exactly, because I'm not spending any extra money, nor is my friend, really -- they're getting the full value out of the subscription. But I'll concede that Rog might have a point with the second thing there. Should there be more in game pets than just these two dogs? Oh, most definitely. I know they've been dismissed as "fluff" from day one, but Mythic's not dumb, and they've seen such a strong reaction to other fluff rewards (trophies, titles, etc.) so far that non-combat vanity pets have to be put back into the discussion. Even if they added other non-com pets into the game, these two dogs would still be unique prizes, so I don't think adding more would take away from their special nature too much.
The magic XP/renown/temporary level boosting item carries with it some sour grapes, I'm sure. Players are pretty sensitive to others getting an "unfair" advantage over them in terms of leveling speed and whatnot. I'm still kicking myself for accidentally selecting the wrong epic jewelry for Syp with the last event (I thought they were all +5% renown, and got the +5% gold one instead because of the stats), but this does carry a whiff of unfairness with it. Of course, every new player I create gets two items that give them a time-limited XP bump, so it's not like we haven't seen this in the game so far -- and it really isn't that game-breaking.
Where I'm prepared to concede Rog's rant is that if this item really does allow a pseudo-Sidekicking feature, then it really should be in the game as standard -- or at least attainable to everyone in the game (perhaps to anyone who's achieved rank 40 or something). It's not terribly difficult to level in WAR, but the concrete barriers of the tier system do fracture guilds and friends who would otherwise play together. Temporary level boosting could allay that -- EverQuest 2 and City of Heroes has already demonstrated that this is both a desired and functional system.
I guess this is a long response to a very short post, but these things bear thinking through, and I'm interested to see if (a) this will really boost people's efforts to recruit friends, (b) if the magic item will be so desired as to cause frustration for those who don't have it, and (c) if we'll be seeing other vanity pets in the game than just these two dogs.
That reminds me -- I still have 6 trial accounts to hand out! E-mail me at bigbanana [at] hotmail [dot] com to request yours. I'm shameless that way.

RMT to me, means real money transactions, so this qualifies.
Incentives I have no issue with, they're usually moderately fluff. Or in the case of bonus gametime it's spending money to save money, who can argue with that? More power to them for offering good deals like that. It's only on the actual serious gameplay feature that I balk.
Why am I worked up this one? Sidekicking / Apprentice is on the top of my list of neglected MMO features (and top of your list too I see). Imagine if playing a Slayer required recruiting 4 friends. Sidekicking is much more important to me than a new class.
Where my real issue is: A game that's sold as a Boxed + Subscription fee, shouldn't be climbing back into our wallets for a substantial feature. Whether it's micro-transactions or under the guise of recruiting new accounts, it feels like a bait-and-switch to me. It's a dupe, a scam. You don't take a base feature like that and put it into money-grab incentives. Or you do and raise the ire of customers who clue in to the trick.
I'm not opposed to the concept of micro-payments and other revenue models, I just don't like them stacked. Its' double-dipping. Multiple vertical markets is a nice marketing phrase, but it's a way to reach into the consumer's pocketbook again on the same base product.
And yes, I'll comment on that sort of thing from a game I've recently quit playing, because it's one of those things where they're testing the waters. If everyone takes it as a-okay and acceptable, it'll start popping up more and more in the games I do play.

As someone who regularly drops $50-100 every few months on items in "free to play" mmos, I have no issue with the recruitment incentives and think they're great. Chances are I'll just be buying all those extra accounts myself for the dog. None of my RL friends play MMOs, or those that do are one hundred percent WoW obsessed. I enjoy having fluff items, and if the only way that a pay to play game will "sink" to adding fluff is by asking me to pay for it I'll gladly pay for it, just to have it.
Freck, I'd give them $20 to let me /sit or /walk. Gladly, if they'd just do it already.

@Ainilome: Sure, but make it F2P or make it Boxed + Subscription. Don't ding us for all of the above.
I don't really want to pay a subscription on a game skewed to players with the deepest pocketbooks.
Sidekick / Apprentice isn't fluff content, it's connected deeply into core gameplay.

From my understanding the sidekick/Apprentice is only a limited time thing, and only usable on friends you recruit. Making it fluff just like the other items. This will simply allow friends to play together for a while, before the item runs out.
Theoretically The Recruit a friend program is a break even marketing strategy. They give already subscribed members a free month for each person they recruit, hoping that recruit will enjoy the game and stay. Saying this is a form of RMT when we as subscribers are in no way putting out any extra money seems a bit odd to me. When all we are really doing is handing out free trials to friends and family in hoping they will sub.
All in all I do think this will help boost peoples effort in recruiting friends and family. At least I know it has me motivated to hand out some free trials.

RMT? Your joking.. I'm not giving money to anyone in exchange for something. I'm not plopping my credit card to get an item. I'm not giving another player money. I just dont see what the fuss is over, much ado about nothing IMO.

I really think this one just went woooosh right over everyone's heads.
You don't put significant gameplay features into reward programs, otherwise yes, it IS paying. Paying for serious ingame items or features is RMT. Period. Whether it's you paying, or you convincing your buddies to pay, the transaction is made regardless.
Fluff items? Who cares, really.
Apprentice? Well if it's temporary, then I guess that would be fluff, but then that begs the question why isn't a proper Apprentice system in place? The old excuses of it affecting game balance seem to have gone out the window with this one. This should be in-game, normally. This is Mythic leveraging for some extra cash. Considering their eagerness to do so, it does impact whether I'd bother buying their next game.
I guess it's just fine to some peeps so long as someone else is paying eh? That says a lot right there.

@Rog
I don't think it went over everyone's heads. I believe it's a simply a case of most people not seeing it the same way you seem to. Consider that the friends you sign up would be paying for the game regardless of whether it's you linking them to it through the recruit-a-friend program or them simply picking it up at a store. Seriously, nobody is paying for these items, not you, nor your friend (unless you want them to receive the game and play for free?). They are simply bonuses to encourage people to get off their ***** and recruit some people. It is not RMT.
And maybe it's just me, but I couldn't give a rat's a$$ about the apprentice wand item. I have 2 +10% xp items that I haven't even touched yet, and I'm rank 32 atm. The level boosting part of it is of limited use as well when you think about it, considering walking into an rvr lake does the same thing.
Lastly, I think it's great that they're adding more incentives to recruits others. This is a game that lives or dies by it's server population. The more people you can get playing on your server, the better.

Just one more thing. The only way I could see this be considered RMT is if you were to invite yourself and purchase extra accounts, but as this is neither forced upon you, nor the purpose of the program, I don't think it really counts as an argument.
