Class is in session -- please pull your desks into a circle and let's get into a good discussion here. The scene: last night, I've joined a hearty warband that's seeking Action(tm) wherever it can get it. First Black Crag -- yup, did everything you could in the RvR lake there. Then we skedaddled over to Caledor. Both Dwarf vs. Greenskin and Elfie vs. Elfie pairings were brushing up against Destruction's fortresses, and buzz in our guild's vent speculated on when we might (if ever) attack the I… More |

A few months ago, we were witness to something pretty common in most new MMOs: the false apocalypse. This happens when a game launches to increased hype, lots of players flood in and get excited, then there's a public falling out of a chunk of them as they don't find the game to meet their standards. I call it just a shakedown of the population, but to a person who's never gone through a MMO launch before, it's pretty easy to get the impression that everyone's leaving, the game sucks, get out … More

"I'm thinking about rolling a healer," one of my guildmates says on vent. "I looked down our guild roster, and we're pretty short on healers."Gee, I replied. Wonder why? Could it be that it's a thankless job with no retirement benefits? Cue sighs and various murmurs of assent. Healing really is the blue collar working force of MMO characters, the ones that get down in the muck and do the dirty job so that the rest can enjoy slashing things with pretty swords and calling down fireballs from … More

Normally in MMO economies, I play the role of the supplier -- I figure out what basic components (crafting, usually) are most needed, focus on harvesting them like a happy dwarf, and sell them to line my pockets with heavy, malleable gold. Normally, that is. Let others be the crafters and extreme farmers -- I prefer to take the safe if boring route of steady cash infusion, saving up until I need to buy the stuff others slave for hours making. In WAR, not so much. Obviously, the economy is s… More

When the borders between sanity and insanity come into view, it's time to take a break from whatever scary obsessive task you're performing -- you know, like endlessly grinding explosive snotlings for a backpack which NEVER DROPS FOR ME.So /logout, followed by the near-unfamiliar character creation screen. I've been tinkering around with the idea of trying out Destruction, y'know, just on the side, and after talking with Keen and Snafzg while making ChaosCast, I felt convicted to give the Squi… More
